Age Requirement



The Known Lands is a "mature" server. We put this in quotes because to call something "mature" typically means there's lots of people running around with little to no clothes on and doing the sorts of things that seem to come naturally when one has little to no clothes on. This is not the case. If sex, drugs, and rock and roll are central to your enjoyment of an online game, you're really best off going elsewhere. In fact, we'd prefer you did. We consider those things disruptive, and activities that are disruptive to other people's enjoyment are not allowed. That's our basic philosophy in a nutshell: don't mess with people's fun. For more information on policies on things like griefing, go here. That said, different people have different ideas of "fun". The team simply cannot police every interaction between characters, and don't place any specific restrictions on what goes on any more than any modern police force can control what you do in the privacy of your own home...paranoia and conspiracy theories aside, of course.

Thus it is possible players will encounter "mature" subject matter such as swearing, alcohol/tobacco consumption, drug references, sexual humor or content, and intense simulated peril in the course of their adventures on this server. Players will also occasionally encounter poorly veiled references to memes, Monty Python, and The Princess Bride (the movie, rather than the book, which is a good read though it's rather a bit darker than one might think if you've seen the movie first). It is up to you which of these sets are the more objectionable in a game that is supposed to be based on Dungeons and Dragons, but we recognize people are a lot more likely to consider the first group inapprorpriate -- for anyone, really, but in particular for those that are under the age of 18. We really try to keep this lighthearted. The stuff you'll see on TKL isn't anything more than you'd generally encounter at the average office party or wedding reception, and a pretty nerdy one at that. Some office parties however, even nerdy ones, may not be the best place for kids. Now, don't get us wrong, we're not trying to pretend that the average teenager is in any way unfamiliar with swear words or depictions of alcohol, tobacco, drugs, or sex. You're far more likely to find a whole lot more of that stuff in any high school than you will here. Nevertheless, the law is that until you're 18 you must have your parents'/parent's/guardians'/guardian's permission to participate in/watch/sit next to/breathe the same air as "adult" themed entertainment. As much as we believe there are plenty of mature (and here that word refers to emotional and intellectual maturity) people out there under 18 that would fit in well with our world and would contribute to everyone's enjoyment of our game, the law requires that you be over 18 to do so.

Therefore, we are compelled to make the following statement: by playing on this server it is possible you will encounter "adult" themes. If you have an issue with this, or if you are under 18, please do not log on. Your joining the server with a character is your certification that you are at least 18 years old and that if you encounter subjects with which you are not comfortable you will log out and contact the administrators with your concerns.
